Trevor Dunn & Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle) on 5049 Records Podcast

Did Mr. Bungle change your perspective of what rock music could be? They did for me and a few friends in high school.

For more insight on how a couple of kids from a small town (Eureka, California) came together to form a highly influential weird band for other weird kids, listen to two recent episodes of the 5049 Records Podcast.

Episode 76 features Trevor Dunn, who also plays bass with Nel Cline, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Sean Lennon, John Zorn, and many others. Dunn describes Eureka as strange redneck town where the members of Mr. Bungle learned to channel their anger towards their piers and environment into music.

In the most recent episode (79), Trey Spruance (who currently leads Secret Chiefs 3) reiterates some of Dunn's points about their youth and Mr. Bungle while delving more deeply into musical influences and the need to create.

The 5049 Records Podcast is hosted weekly by Jeremiah Cymerman and features a who's who in experimental music.

In related news, Cymerman will be taking over The Stone (John Zorn's NYC club) from November 11-16.
